Kerala Under Threat: IMD Issues Red Alert as Monsoon Rains Trigger Crisis in Eight Districts

Kerala is witnessing a severe weather crisis as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for eight districts in the state, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and the risk of natural disasters. The districts under high alert include Idukki, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

The alert comes amid a significant intensification of the southwest monsoon over the southern part of India. Meteorologists attribute the worsening weather to a cyclonic circulation developing over northern parts of the country, funneling moisture-laden winds toward Kerala. This has resulted in prolonged spells of heavy rainfall, already affecting daily life in several parts of the state.

In the hilly terrains of Idukki and Wayanad, the risk of landslides is mounting. Local authorities have initiated preventive evacuations in several villages located near unstable hill slopes. The district administrations have declared school holidays and restricted movement on vulnerable roads.

In urban areas such as Ernakulam and Kozhikode, waterlogging has caused traffic snarls and disrupted public transportation. Emergency teams have been deployed to pump out water from flooded streets and assist residents in low-lying areas. Power outages have been reported in parts of Kottayam and Kasaragod due to fallen trees and damaged power lines.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has directed district collectors to remain on high alert and coordinate with rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Relief camps are being set up in high-risk zones to accommodate affected families.

The IMD has urged citizens to monitor official weather bulletins and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Fishermen have been warned against venturing out to sea due to rough weather and strong wind conditions.

With the rains expected to persist over the next few days, authorities are preparing for possible dam openings and flash floods. Continuous monitoring of rivers and reservoirs is underway, particularly in central Kerala where catchment areas are receiving heavy inflow.

As the state braces for more rainfall, cooperation between residents, local authorities, and emergency services remains crucial in managing the ongoing crisis and minimizing damage.
