Myanmar Struggles to Cope with Aftermath of 7.7 Earthquake: 23 Dead and Counting

A massive earthquake, registering 7.7 in magnitude, struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, leaving the country grappling with the aftermath. As of now, at least 23 people have been confirmed dead, and the number is expected to rise as search-and-rescue operations continue. The earthquake, which hit near Mandalay in central Myanmar, has caused widespread damage to buildings, roads, and communication infrastructure.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, there were widespread power outages, and many communities were left without access to basic services. Rescue teams are working around the clock to dig through rubble and locate survivors, but aftershocks continue to complicate efforts, making the work of emergency responders even more dangerous.

Hospitals in the affected areas are overwhelmed with casualties, and there is an urgent need for medical supplies, food, and clean water. Myanmar’s disaster response capacity has been stretched thin, and the government has called for international assistance to help with recovery efforts.

Several countries, including neighboring Thailand and China, have offered support, sending medical teams, rescue personnel, and humanitarian aid to assist with the crisis. The earthquake has highlighted the vulnerabilities of Myanmar’s infrastructure and the pressing need for greater disaster preparedness in the region.
