Supreme Court Seeks Government’s Response on Preventing Obscene Material from Circulating Online

The Supreme Court of India has raised an important issue regarding the unrestricted access to obscene content on the internet. The Court has requested the Union Government to respond to the issue and propose a framework for the regulation of such material. Concerns about the spread of explicit content online have grown in recent years, especially with the rise of social media platforms that allow users to easily upload and share videos and images.

Legal experts and child safety activists have been calling for stronger regulatory measures to prevent children and vulnerable groups from being exposed to explicit content. While India has some existing laws governing online content, the Court’s directive indicates that the current legal framework might not be sufficient to address the challenges posed by the digital age.

The Supreme Court’s intervention could push for a more comprehensive approach to online content regulation. This includes the need for clearer guidelines for social media platforms, stricter penalties for violators, and more transparency in content moderation. The Union Government’s stance on the matter will play a crucial role in shaping the direction of these regulations.
