Parliament Proceedings: Both houses adjourned for the day amid rukus over price rise and GST hike on essential commodities

Opposition uproar over price rise and GST hike on essential commodities marred the proceedings of both the Houses of Parliament on the third consecutive day, today. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day after witnessing uproarious scenes by Opposition members. The Opposition members including Congress, DMK and Left Parties trooped to the well of the house demanding rollback of GST on essential commodities.

When the Lower House met for the day in the morning, Speaker Om Birla tried to take up the Question Hour even as Opposition members trooped to the well of the house shouting slogans against price rise. Congress Members were seen displaying milk and butter milk packets as a mark of protest. The Speaker appealed to the agitating members to go back to their seats and take part in discussions. Stated that the majority of members want Parliament to work, he urged the agitating members that they will be given chance during the Zero Hour.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi also appealed to the Opposition members to allow the proceedings. Amidst din, the Speaker adjourned the house till 2 PM When the house reassembled, similar scenes repeated and the sloganeering Opposition members again trooped to the well-displaying placards. Amidst din, the house took up matters of urgent attention under Rule 377. The agitating members did not heed the repeated requests by the chair to go back to their seats which forced adjournment. The pandemonium continued when the house reassembled at 4 PM following which the chair adjourned the house for the day.

The Rajya Sabha also witnessed adjournments over Opposition uproar on price rise and GST hike. When the Upper House met for the day, Opposition members including Congress, Left, AAP, DMK, and TMC repeatedly trooped to the well-raising slogans against the government. Some Congress members were seen carrying milk product packets as a mark of protest. Amid ruckus, the chair urged the agitating members to maintain order in the house. The chair also objected to some of the protesting members for video recording inside the house saying it is against the rules. As the pandemonium continued, the house was adjourned initially for some time and later for the day.
