The $2.3 billion funding hold—ordered in response to Harvard’s refusal to dismantle DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) efforts and enforce policies targeting pro-Palestinian protests—has drawn national attention.
Obama, a Harvard Law alumnus, argued that the university’s decision represents a critical moment in preserving academic independence. “Colleges are not tools of the state; they are where ideas wrestle freely,” he stated in a public address. Faculty and students, while bracing for potential budget cuts, have responded with solidarity, calling the administration’s move a “thinly veiled political stunt.”
