D.K. Shivakumar, a senior Congress leader in Karnataka, has categorically denied claims made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that he suggested constitutional amendments to grant reservations for Muslims. The BJP had taken issue with remarks made by Shivakumar during a recent public address, where he spoke on the issue of social justice and affirmative action.
Shivakumar quickly clarified the situation, asserting that his comments were misinterpreted. He explained that his call for equal opportunities for marginalized communities was not an attempt to create religious divisions but to ensure social equity for all. According to the Congress leader, the BJP’s attempt to accuse him of proposing changes to the Constitution was nothing but a political strategy aimed at polarizing voters.
Shivakumar emphasized that the Congress party’s position on reservations is based on the Constitution’s principles of equality and fairness. He stated that his speech was in line with the party’s long-standing stance of ensuring that all underprivileged communities receive support based on socio-economic factors, not religion.
The BJP’s allegations have sparked a heated debate in Karnataka, with Shivakumar’s clarification attempting to refocus the discussion on social justice rather than religious reservations. As the state elections draw near, this controversy has become another point of contention between the Congress and the BJP.
